Editor’s note: The recent allegation on N1 trillion looting of the public funds committed by Ibrahim Lamorde, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), sparked a stormy reaction in the Nigerian political circles. On Monday, August 24, 2015, the major Nigerian newspapers devoted their front pages to the matter.

While President Muhammadu Buhari called on the Nigerian lawers to join the anti-corruption campaign, the members of the Peoples Democratic Party led by the Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio, insisted on suspending the investigation of the EFCC chairman, claiming it was not the right time for it. Nevertheless, yesterday the Senate confirmed the probe would take place against all odds, moreover, Lamorde expressed his intention to cooperate with the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions in order to help it to resolve the matter.

Naij.com guest author, Prince Daniel Onyemaka, makes an overview of one of the most notable recent corruption scandals in Nigeria.

Like a rainstorm that gathers in the midst of a hot slack day, revelation of the thieves in the government agencies knows no stop or pause. This singular act is always a handiwork of karma, which never charges the upright for adjudication.

While we are still counting on the paradigm shift in handling the public money at different levels, another mind-blowing exposure has just gained momentum. Who on earth will ever anticipate that the supposed emperor of financial tranquility could fail to worship the deity under his watch without tempering with its foods? A body set up to monitor financial misconduct is now a victim of same. What a disgrace!

A betrayer in the holy of holies of the anti-corruption struggle

The deceptive look of Ibrahim Lamorde is capable of making strict warnings to the marauders, whose only objective in life is to swindle innocent Nigerians. His outpour on the national broadcast sends a feeling of cold fear and hypertension, if your hands are not clean. Lamorde, who is regarded the chief priest of financial justice, couldn’t pass by without getting attracted by the gods’ food. If fire could burn the tortoise with an iron shield, can a feather coat help it to escape the same fate? Then who are now the bigger thieves? Those who returned what they looted after being caught and put to justice, or the keeper of the sanctuary fixated on the holy communion wine? In all, we can unequivocally say Mother Earth has come to judgement. The criminal in all of us, whose horse have we not stolen?

Shall I say that I weep for my country, or are we simply not on the right track of getting things done properly? What will Ibrahim Lamorde do with the diverted sum of over one trillion naira (N1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00; pardon me if the zeros are less or more in number, because I have never encountered such an amount in my entire life)? Little wonder, some bigwigs in the country have no fear of the EFCC arrest anymore, as its sacred office has suddenly refused to dump the criminals, whose fates are often tied to its strength. A house of sanctity has become the dungeon of monetary power prowess.

It is a display of flagrant disobedience to the rule of law for such mockery activities to be taking place in the hallowed chamber that is supposed to harbour equity and fairness. With this sordid revelation, the EFCC has lost the purpose why it was founded. It should render an unreserved apology to Nigerians and make its shameless chairman face the capital punishment to serve as a deterrent. Corruption has become a norm, and a few who tend to act in an upright manner are rather considered strange fellows. It is time to apply inquisitorial methods to handling of the thieves and have their heads hang in full public view.

One people – one struggle

While President Buhari is trying to ensure the monies stolen and took abroad by the previous government officials are recovered and sent back to the federal coffer so that improvement can greet our motherland, the heads of different agencies here in the country are busy siphoning and burying trillions in their farms and reservoirs.

Is it that we are lack of shame or some people at that helm of the state affairs are cursed beyond measure? Our country is full of surprises: while we are yet to come to terms with the EFCC boss’s loot, I am sure more cases are yet to be uncovered, especially among the paramilitary agencies, which bosses invented the word “replacement”. Instead of providing recruitment for the Nigerian youths, they prefer to sell the available vacancies only to those whose parents can afford it. The rot in the system remains untouched, however, we smile as though everything is fine with us. Who will come to our rescue? How long are we going to endure like this? Will Nigeria ever be set free from being labelled the worst corrupt black nation?

I wish, after this negative occurrence, all Nigerian youths will spring up to their feet and become voluntary reporters, because, truth be told, the president can not do it all alone. I once ran into a civil servant owning multiple plazas and mansions. He never made a sign he had committed any crime, however, he could not account for everything he owned after barely seven years in the system. If we truly want Nigeria to move forward, everybody must rise up to the occasion because the president, just like his predecessors, is living surrounded by the evil men without conscience. From the lowest to the highest level of the three tiers of the government, those who have sinned and fallen short of our dear motherland Nigeria cannot be justified. The question is who will rescue the nation from the abyss? This question has remained unanswered from time immemorial, therefore, only Mother Earth can atone the sins committed by sojourners
