  • Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Bamako in Mali on for the second time in a month to demand for the stepping down if their President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

    This new uproar increased due to irregularities in election results in March which turnout was low due in part to fears of attacks by jihadist groups who roam the desert north. 

    The poor turn out to the elections was marred by allegations of vote buying, intimidation and the kidnapping of opposition leader Soumaila Cisse.

    The economic communities of west African states (ECOWAS) has been involved by “inviting the Government of the Republic of Mali to look into the results of all the districts which have been subject to review,” the group said in a statement after a two-day mission to the country. “New elections for the constituencies concerned should be organized as soon as possible.” According to ECOWAS.

    The U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has intervene by urging for calmness and ask for dialogue after some opposing political figure in the country insist on disobeying the civil society during there last protests.

    It’s obvious that Nigeria needs to borrow a lead or two from this update on Mali and follow suit to project election inadequacies whenever it occurs. The teaming population can take decisions to effect the needed change in our political space.
