The Nigerian rice production caucus is been struggling with increase in production and standard of the produced rice because of the external conditions involved in the process of achieving world standard.

Recently, it was in the news that about 567,000 metric tons of rice have arrived seme boarder waiting to be smuggled into the Nigeria market for the festive season.

These is against the effort of the federal government to increase rice production and it standard so as to compete with that imported into the country from India and China respectively.

But it seems the government is loosing the battle as the Senate Committee on Agriculture on Wednesday in Abuja said about two million metric tons of rice is currently being imported or smuggled into the country.

The total consumption of rice in the country is pegged at five million metric tons and the local production hasn't been able to meet upto about 10% of the total tons.

All these and many more are the reasons why the government is been struggling with establishing a standard of operation for the by which rice production will become a Nigerian economic standard.
