Robert Mugabe resigned as Zimbabwe’s president on Tuesday a week after the army and his former political allies moved against him, ending four decades of rule by a man who turned from independence hero to strongman.

The 93-year-old had clung on for a week after an army takeover and expulsion from his own ruling ZANU PF party, but  only resigned shortly after parliament began an impeachment process seen as the only legal way to kick him out.

Wild celebrations broke out at a joint sitting of parliament when Speaker Jacob Mudenda announced Mugabe’s resignation and subsequently suspended the impeachment process.

His resignation speech actually made it look like he has a choice anyways,

“My decision to resign is voluntary on my part and arises from my concern for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe and my desire for a smooth, non-violent transfer of power,”

Really, after clinging on to power for a full week even aft military takeover and loss of all. But it seems the Oldman will be accorded a soft landing after all. This is perceived so because of the way the Zimbabwean handle the whole Mugabe situation,

The military takeover could have been bloody, but bloodshed was avoided, instead, the seekfor more legal means to kick the Oldman out, also there was a nationwide peaceful demonstration in which no government officials are attacked, no building burnt, no public property vandalised people just pour out to register their dissatisfaction.

One of the undoubted achievements of the former teacher’s 33 years in power was the expansion of education. Zimbabwe still has one of the highest literacy rates in Africa, at 89% of the population.

Even now that he’s on house arrest, it continuations may largely depend on what his successor feels like as he’s to be sworn in within fourth eight hours of resignation, and why not, well, why anyways.., why not let the Oldman die in peace by his own fate, after all he’s a vital part of the nations history. What the heck, he’s 93yrs old, and his death will not be misplaced or missed, but if nothing is missed his regular taunting of world powers at the floor of the United Nations will be dearly missed.
