Zambia's opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has defeated incumbent President Edgar Lungu in the presidential election.

The country deployed the military ahead of the election due to possible escalations of political violence. In the final tally, the United Party for National Development leader Hichilema received 2,810,777 votes while Lungu received 1,814,201 votes; there were seven million registered voters
