REASONS NIGERIAN CROP PRODUCTS ARE REJECTED BY OTHER COUNTRIES
Nigerians farm products are been rejected by other countries, this isn’t a good sign for a country looking to capitalize on agricultural products for survival.
Nigerian grain products are been rejected outside the country due to the level of Aflatoxins imbibed in them. Aflatoxins are harmful toxins produced by certain fungi that are found on agricultural crops such as maize (corn), peanuts, cottonseed, and tree nuts. Their presence on some grains grown in Nigeria has prompted the rejection of these agro-products in the international market.
The reason for aflatoxins in peas and other crop products could be traced to weather, preservatives or insects prickles that can cause the seeds to start an internal depression. In order to make Nigerian crop products acceptable in other countries, Local farmers needs to profer a solution to the excess aflatoxins coherent in it crops.
This is one of the major discussion at the recent communique issued at the end of a one-day workshop organised in Abuja by Harvest Field Industries Limited and IITA, they aimed at sharing results of aflatoxin levels in maize sampled nationwide under the CBN Anchor Borrowers Programme 2020 Wet Season Project.
The follow up on this results will be the adoption of appropriate technologies and scientific means for the reduction of aflatoxin in our crops, food, feeds and livestock which is expected to help achieve zero rejection of commodities exported from Nigeria.
