SUDAN ON FIRE AS THE NEW YEAR PROGRESSES
The prime minister resigned because he couldn’t bring back civilian rulers following the recent coup that brought him to power
Sudan’s civilian Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok resigned on Sunday as deadly protests continue after October’s coup.
Hamdok, who was reinstated by military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan as the country’s civilian leader in November, said in a televised address that recent mediation attempts had failed.
He added that, “I have tried my best to stop the country from sliding towards disaster.” Anti-coup protests have continued, leaving at least 54 dead, while internet services have been disrupted.
In a televised address to the nation on Sunday evening, Sudan PM Hamdok said Sudan was "at a serious crossroads" and unless there is broad-based national consensus the country may "slide into chaos."
