Russia is massing some 100,000 troops and military equipment around Ukraine, and possibly mobilizing 75,000 reservists to join them. A volunteer guerrilla army is preparing to fight back.

Ukraine could be threatened with another large-scale attack unless the Kremlin’s demands for the US and NATO to abandon support for Kyiv are met. The move could spark a land war of the likes not seen in Europe since 1945.

Veteran instructors are overseeing a rag-tag group of civilian volunteers including taxi drivers, school teachers, and more, demonstrating the lengths Ukrainians are prepared to go if President Vladimir Putin invades.

Thousands of volunteers have joined the forces in recent months. They gather to train one day each weekend, donning hunting attire and mismatching uniforms from army surplus stores.

The forces technically fall under the command of the Ukrainian military, but that doesn’t mean the military provides them garb and gear. For now, they are forced to purchase everything on their own.

Ukraine’s army is now one of the largest in Europe, but it is still not strong and experienced enough to defeat Russia’s military. Officials are calling on the US to offer more support.
